WA: Shark precautions in place at annual swimming race

Aircraft patrols will help ensure the 420 swimmers taking part in the Busselton Jettyswimming race will remain safe from sharks.

Organisers of the annual four-kilometre race met with Fisheries officers to discussemergency plans for the swimmers taking part in the event today, should a shark be sighted.

A Fisheries spokeswoman says a fisheries officer will also patrol the Busselton waters, about 230 kilometres south of Perth.

The measures come only a few weeks after a man was attacked by a shark at the CollieRiver, a popular swimming and crabbing spot about 175 kilometres south of Perth and onlyabout 50km from today's race location.

The man, 32, received wounds to his inner thigh and had 21 stitches.

Since the attack, a fisheries vessel has patrolled the area around the mouth of theCollie River and nearby Leschenault Estuary.
