Vic: Melbourne s north hit by small quake

Residents of Melbourne's northern suburbs were rocked last night by a small earthquake.

Residents have reported hearing a loud crashing noise.

The Seismology Research Centre says no damage has been reported.

The centre's operations manager VAUGHAN WESSON says the quake at 10.27pm (AEDT) measured
2.3 on the Richter scale and was centred at Epping and also felt in Mill Park and Reservoir.

Mr VAUGHAN says the quake was unusually deep, centred some 15km below the earth's surface.

A similar-sized quake hit the same area in August last year.
