NSW:Man who stabbed wife 41 times mentally ill
Eds: The judge has ordered the names of the offender, the victim and the child not
be published, as well as the gender of the child.
By Britt Smith
SYDNEY, Aug 5 AAP - A man who left a carving knife embedded in his wife's neck after
stabbing her 41 times in front of their child has been found not guilty of murder due
to mental illness.
NSW Supreme Court Acting Justice Graham Barr concluded on Friday the offender, who
cannot be named for legal reasons, was suffering from a chronic paranoid schizophrenic
illness when he ferociously attacked his young wife at their Griffith house.
Their baby, whose cries were heard throughout the ordeal, was found lying on the carpet
near the mother's feet, along with the second weapon, a serrated steak knife.
A large carving knife was protruding from her neck, where the most wounds were inflicted,
along with the upper chest.
The woman's mother had been on the phone to her daughter and remained on the line throughout
the January 2010 killing.
She heard her and the baby screaming, while the accused was making a "grunting" sound
as if he was doing heavy physical work, the judge said.
Moments later the man walked into Griffith Police Station covered in blood.
"I just killed my wife," he said, putting his head in his hands and leaning against the counter.
Justice Barr described the couple's relationship as argumentative, partly because the
husband wanted his wife to behave more accordingly to the customs and habits of his own
culture.
The man was critical about the way she managed the household.
On the day of the murder, the woman called her mother complaining that he was threatening
to take the child overseas.
A heated argument erupted and then she heard her daughter yell: "No, I won't do it,
please don't".
The man later told Department of Community Services caseworkers: "I got cut and I cut
her throat. She fell down".
She said "I'm dying", he told them, but added she was always joking around and he was drunk.
The judge accepted evidence that the man experienced a delusional belief he was in
imminent danger of being killed, that his child was in danger of being mistreated and
that he was at risk of being deported.
He told a psychiatrist he believed his wife and mother-in-law wanted to stab him.
"He responded by obtaining a knife and stabbing the deceased," the judge said, later
adding that "the attack was ferocious".
Justice Barr also accepted that the man's psychotic illness would have totally deprived
him of the capacity to know and understand that he should not have acted as he did.
In noting the events must have been "distressing and perplexing" for the victim's relatives,
the judge extended the court's sympathies to them.
"It is to be hoped that now that the court hearing is over those concerned may gain
some peace of mind," he said.
The judge ordered the man be detained at a jail psychiatric hospital ward until, and
if, the Mental Health Review Tribunal deems him not to be a danger to the community or
himself.

Dennis, John
Two years later Dennis improved the story by saying that Elizabeth commanded Shakespeare to write the play ‘in ten days’ time’. Nicholas Rowe elaborated further: ‘she was so well pleased with that admirable character of Falstaff, in the two Parts of Henry the Fourth, that she commanded him to continue it for one play more, and to show him in love.’
In 1710, Charles Gildon conflated the anecdotes: ‘the Queen … who had obliged him to write a play of Sir John Falstaff in love and which I am very well assured he performed in a fortnight.’
Dennis also adapted Coriolanus as The Invader of his Country (1719).

Research and Markets Adds Report: Kazakhstan - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Forecasts
Type: News
Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Kazakhstan - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Forecasts" report to its offerings.
In a release, Research and Markets noted that report highlights include:
Although growth slowed significantly in 2009, Kazakhstan has been experiencing a booming telecom market that included almost 100 percent mobile penetration by early 2010. This has come about on the back of a growing economy and a program of positive regulatory reform in the telecom sector. Legislation adopted in 2004 laid the foundation for the liberalisation and development of the telecom sector and put an end to the monopoly enjoyed by Kazakhtelecom, the state-controlled telecom operator.
The rapid and successful development of telecommunications in the country encouraged several foreign suppliers to establish a presence in this emerging market. Since 1992, international operators and manufacturers have been active in Kazakhstan in providing services and installing state-of-the-art equipment, especially as part of the country's international telecom network. Companies such as Motorola, Lucent, Siemens, Alcatel, Nokia, Daewoo and Nortel Networks have all been active in the market. Recognising the long-term potential of this market, many foreign telecom companies were looking to invest and form partnerships with local telecom companies.
By 2005 four private operators had been licensed to provide international and long-distance services in competition with the incumbent Kazakhtelecom. They were state-railway subsidiary TransTelecom, KazTransCom (a subsidiary of the national oil company), Ducat and Astel. Up to 1,500 new telecom service providers of various kinds had been licensed by end-2005.
The Key Drivers in the Telecom Sector Included:
-the deployment of Kazakhtelecom's fully-digital national telecom network based on local and long-distance switches and fibre optic lines linking all major cities in the country;
-efforts to improve international connectivity and increase both mobile and fixed-line subscribers; the continuing digitalisation of exchanges;
-the further reform of telecommunications legislation;
-the process of accession to the World Trade Organization. Kazakhstan had a relatively strong fixed-line penetration (24 telephone lines per 100 inhabitants by end-2009), with six operators providing fixed-line telephone services to about 3.8 million subscribers.
There had been long waiting lists for fixed-line telephone services over the years. The country's mobile market entered a boom phase in 2000, no doubt boosted to some extent by the long delays in obtaining fixed-line services. The number of mobile services had exceeded fixed-lines by late 2004. Demand for mobile services was so strong that in 2006 that the government went on to auction a third GSM licence (and fourth mobile operator licence), which was duly awarded to NeoTelecom, a subsidiary of Kazakhtelecom. NeoTelecom then launched its mobile service in early 2007.
Of particular note has been the recent healthy growth in Internet activity in Kazakhstan, with the move to broadband access in particular taking place at a rapid rate. Broadband subscribers as a proportion of the population had reached 10 percent by early 2010, with the market likely to continue its expansion by 100 percent annually.
Major Highlights:
-After Kazakhstan's mobile market delivered annual growth of 36 percent in 2008, the 2009 year saw a major slowdown in the market with net growth almost negligible;
-With a mobile penetration approaching 100 percent in early 2010, the country's mobile market was continuing to grow but was expected to start saturating in the not too distant future;
-Broadband Internet was quickly expanding on top of a general upturn in demand for Internet services; the number of broadband subscribers increased tenfold from a relatively small base in 2006/ 07, then doubled in 2008 and doubled again in 2009;
-There had been a significant shift to broadband access in 2009 as the proportion of Internet subscribers using broadband shifted from 43 percent to 76 percent in that twelve-month period;
-Kazakhstan, despite the considerable presence of incumbent Kazakhtelecom across the market, was continuing to benefit from a diversified market that offered an energetic and competitive environment, especially in respect of the mobile market;
On the economic front, after an eight-year period in which GDP had been growing at an annual rate in excess of 8 percent, 2008 saw a major slowdown in the Kazakhstan economy with GDP growth falling to 3 percent; 2009 saw growth fall even further (to around 1 percent) as the full impact of the global financial crisis hit.
A modest recovery in the short term has been forecast by the IMF with a GDP growth rate of 2 percent expected in 2010 and 4 percent in 2011.

QLD:Ex-teacher aide seeks asbestos compo
BRISBANE, Dec 20 AAP - A former pre-school teacher aide suffering terminal mesothelioma
is seeking compensation after working in a classroom undergoing renovations in the 1980s.
The woman in her early 60s, who does not want to be named, worked at Shailer Park State
Pre-School, in Brisbane's south, in 1983 while renovations were made to the preschool,
her lawyer says.
Maurice Blackburn associate Trent Johnson said Queensland government documents confirmed
the presence of asbestos within the original pre-school building, built in 1982, and the
extensions constructed the following year.
"Education facilities in Shailer Park were at a premium in the early 1980s and just
a year after the original preschool was built, it needed to double its size to meet demand,"
Mr Johnson said.
"Normal classes were conducted while the preschool extensions were under construction
and everyone who was at the site during the building works in early to mid-1983 would
have been exposed to the asbestos dust."
Asbestos fibres cause respiratory disease and cancer, including asbestosis and mesothelioma,
but the illnesses can take decades to develop.
Mr Johnson said a workers' compensation claim had been lodged.
His client was awaiting a decision on that, expected soon, before deciding whether
to sue the Queensland government for past and future economic loss, he said.
Mr Johnson urged others who attended the preschool in 1983 to register with the firm's
asbestos database.
That would allow supporting evidence to be gathered from past school attendees for
claims and would make future claims easier, he said.
Mr Johnson said the case would not necessarily become a class action.
"Not everyone who's exposed to asbestos will come down with an illness ... but if we
had a large number of people suffering from asbestos-related illnesses, anything is possible,"
he said.
Education Queensland's acting deputy director-general of infrastructure services, Lee
Callum, said some asbestos-removal work had been undertaken at the school.
The most recent was the replacing of the vinyl floors in the prep building earlier
this year, he said.
"Asbestos-containing materials in good condition and left undisturbed does not pose
a health risk," Mr Callum said in a statement on Monday evening.
"Where removal of asbestos-containing material is required, this work takes place out
of school hours, under strict conditions, when staff and students are not present."

FED: Cannabis leads to drink, hard drugs: study
SYDNEY, April 4 AAP - Parents have been warned to take a tough line on teenagers who
smoke cannabis, with research showing even occasional use can lead to alcoholism and harder
drugs.
Fairfax newspapers say about 2000 Australian schoolchildren were tracked over a decade
in a study that found those who had used cannabis occasionally at age 13 and 14 were more
likely to be taking ecstasy, cocaine or amphetamines at 24. They were also more at risk
of addiction to cannabis, with one in 10 occasional teenage users hooked as adults.
Almost one-third of occasional cannabis users were taking harder drugs in their early
20s compared with 11 per cent of those who had not earlier used the substance.
The study, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, linked higher levels of
alcoholism to cannabis use. It said 15 per cent of occasional cannabis smokers were addicted
to alcohol in early adulthood, compared with only nine per cent of those who had not smoked
dope.
The study contradicts previous research that suggested regularly smoking the drug could
lead to adult substance abuse but was less harmful if used infrequently.
Lead author Louisa Degenhardt, from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at
the University of NSW, said the study highlighted the need for early intervention to stop
children taking up the habit.
"What it definitely says is that early onset occasional cannabis use is a marker for
being more likely to be engaging in a whole range of drug use behaviours in young adulthood."
Australian Childhood Foundation chief executive Joe Tucci urged parents not to allow
their children to experiment with cannabis.
"Patterns of behaviour start early in children, so these habits can be very hard to
break. Cannabis can cause lots of detrimental impacts all the way through to psychosis
as you get older, so the perception of cannabis as a softer, harmless drug is not right."

BRISBANE, Feb 10 AAP - A man found in bushland not far from where his mother's body
was found yesterday will be interviewed by north Queensland police.
Colin Wilson, 68, and his mother Ida, 92, were reported missing when Mr Wilson failed
to return his mother to her Mareeba nursing home after an afternoon drive on Thursday.
Ms Wilson's body was found yesterday, close to her son's four-wheel drive, about 20km
east of Mareeba, at Davies Creek off the Kennedy Highway.
Police are treating her death as suspicious.
Mr Wilson wandered across a search party at Davies Creek about 7.30am (AEST) today.
Acting Detective Inspector Brad Eaton said he had been taken to Mareeba Hospital for
medical treatment.
"He spent close to three days in the scrub so he has some minor injuries and is extremely
tired," Insp Eaton told AAP.
Mr Wilson will be questioned after he receives treatment, Insp Eaton said.
"He is a person of interest as he was the last person to see his mother alive, and
we need to find out what transpired over the last couple of days," he said.
The pair were expected at a family celebration to mark Ms Wilson's 92nd birthday on Friday.
A post mortem on her body is expected to reveal a cause of death tomorrow.

Fed: McGuire says he faces his toughest challenge
Eds: Changes keyword from NINE
CANBERRA, Feb 10 AAP - New Nine Network head Eddie McGuire today admitted his toughest
challenge would be the transition from top rating TV presenter to company chief executive.
In an early morning appearance on Nine's flagship Today program, Mr McGuire said he
liked getting in front of the cameras.
"It's going to be the hardest thing because every waking moment of my life has been
about the shows I have been on, how do we make them better, what do we do," he said.
"And I enjoy getting in front of the camera. It will be difficult but it's another
part of your life and I'm very much up to it."
Mr McGuire said the trick would be to come up with the right shows, work them out then
invest the funds.
"We have to work out what people want to see, not what you think they want to see.
That's what we'll be into," he said.
"I'm not big on being number two in anything ever. There's no doubt we have o get the
profit up and get those margins right. That's not just for the financial community. We
are part of PBL and that's the riding instructions that I have - but not at the expense
of putting on top quality television."
Mr McGuire recalled his first television appearance as a 17-year-old schoolboy at the
Seven Network in Melbourne in 1982.
"The person who was supposed to meet me wasn't there and they said, 'Well do a standup'
and threw me the paper," he said.
"I said I'm going to be on the next train back to Broadmeadows here but we survived."
Asked if had ever dreamt he would end up running the Nine Network, he replied: "I thought
I'd be running the country".
"It's an amazing thing. From the time I was 17 all I wanted to do was actually ...
what you guys are doing," he told Today presenters Jessica Rowe and Karl Stefanovic.
"There's a wonderful adventure now coming forward. What we want to do at Channel Nine
is continue out tradition of being the foremost television station."
"It's not only the traditional Tens and Sevens we'll be fighting, we've got mobile
phones and the internet and all that type of thing. So we have to take a 2006 to 2010
approach to what television is going to mean to people."
"They have had a honeymoon period now Seven. We are back in town as of Monday, (when
ratings begin)."
Mr McGuire said he could only point to what he had done as a means of convincing critics
he could handle this fresh challenge.
"I have lived the industry and I have always found financial analysts far more prepared
to take on somebody who knows something about the business that they're running as opposed
to somebody who's been successful running a mining company suddenly coming into a television
company," he said.
Mr McGuire disputed the suggestion that he got the job because of his friendship with
PBL chairman James Packer.
"Let there be no mistake, James Packer's best friend is the PBL share price.
"It's not like I was unemployed and need a job and he was looking for somebody and
it's not like he was the only person who made a decision," he said.

Vic: Paramedic speaks out against fencing rock pool tragedy area
MELBOURNE, Dec 27 AAP - An ambulance paramedic who worked in vain to help save four
members of a family who drowned on Christmas Day has spoken out against calls to fence
off the Victorian mountain rock pool where the tragedy occurred.
Paramedic Wayne Rice said today visitors to McKenzie Falls in the Grampians National
Park should heed signs warning against slippery rocks and swimming in the rock pool, rather
than diminishing the area's beauty by putting up a fence.
His comments follow the Christmas Day drownings of 12-year-old Marina Mir, her father
Muzaffer, 55, and her uncles Mahzar Dar, 35, and Tahir Bhatti, 35, in an horrific chain
of events that has rocked Melbourne's tight-knit Pakistani community of which they were
members.
Marina's father, uncles and 17-year-old sister all entered the pool in an attempt to
rescue the girl, only to get into difficulties in the icy water.
The sister was revived after being pulled from the pool and was later released from
Stawell Hospital.
Mr Rice was among four paramedics who desperately but unsuccessfully attempted to revive
two in the party.
An ambulance paramedic for 17 years, Mr Rice said this Christmas was probably the worst
he had experienced.
"The looks on people's faces, people who weren't related and didn't know the people,
but they knew the events that happened... " Mr Rice told Melbourne radio station 3AW.
As the grief-stricken families attempted to come to terms with the tragedy, one of
the dead girl's relatives yesterday labelled the falls a death trap.
"There should be a fence there," said Khalid Mir, another of the dead girl's uncles.
"There is a sign, but it is invisible.
"This has been doomsday for us... please put a fence there."
Mr Rice said similar calls were aired to him by a grief-stricken family member at the scene.
"One of the family members came to me afterwards and said - Why do you make it like
this'?" he said. "She said - Why don't you put a fence up?"
Mr Rice spoke of the isolation of the area, the arduous path to the rock pool and the
failure of mobile phones at the foot of the falls.
"If you enter into the water, the slime that is on the rocks, they become very slippery
and it is understandable that someone could slip.
"It is not understandable that four lives have been lost."
Meanwhile, Victoria's Tourism Minister John Pandazopolous told the ABC that multicultural
water safety programs might need to be improved, in light of the incident.
Mr Pandazopolous said water safety was just as important at inland venues.
"At the end of the day you can't put barricades around everything," Mr Pandazopolous
told the ABC.
"It's about awareness amongst people themselves, it's about taking precautions and
only doing what you know you're capable of with your abilities.

Man pleads innocent in Internet sex case.(News)
Byline: Tony Gordon Daily Herald Legal Affairs Writer
A Waukegan man accused of soliciting sex over the Internet from someone he believed was a child pleaded not guilty Thursday in Lake County Circuit Court.
Darwin Calilap, 26, of 1633 Partridge St., is charged with attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse in the June 18 incident, Assistant State's Attorney Christen Bishop said.
Calilap, who police said was communicating under the username "GINN08," was exchanging computer messages with Lake County Sheriff's Detective Rick White for about one hour that day, Bishop said.
Bishop said Calilap asked White, who portrayed himself in the chat room exchange as a 14-year-old boy from Beach Park, to meet him for sex at the Illinois State Beach Park in Zion.
Calilap told White he would be driving a black Mitsubishi Eclipse and described the clothes he would be wearing for the meeting he scheduled for 1:30 p.m. that day, Bishop said.
Undercover police were watching as a black Eclipse with a lone occupant arrived in the park parking lot about 1:15 p.m. and waited for several minutes before leaving, Bishop said.
Police stopped the car as it exited the park, Bishop said, and found Calilap was driving the vehicle and wearing the clothing he described to police.
Police said Calilap told them he had gone to the park planning to meet a 14-year-old boy for the purposes of sex.
Associate Judge George Bridges told Calilap, who is being held on $50,000 bond, he faces up to five years in prison if convicted of the charges and ordered him to appear in court again July 29.
He is the eighth person to be charged with Internet solicitation of sex in similar stings by Lake County detectives since spring 1998.

Plantation, Fla.-Based Mortgage Firm Finds Fresh Referral Source.
Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News
Aug. 6 -- FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- In an effort to boost its pool of mortgage applicants, mortgage.com has signed a deal with Intuit, which produces the TurboTax and Quicken software package.
In the agreement announced Wednesday, Intuit will refer loan candidates with less-than-stellar credit records to mortgage.com, based in Plantation.
Mortgage.com, formerly known as First Mortgage Network, specializes in a broad range of mortgage services, including subprime lending.
Earlier this year, the company began remaking itself as an Internet mortgage originator. The Web accounted for 20 percent of the $2 billion in mortgages the company issued last year.
Alison Berkley Wagonfeld, director of marketing at Intuit's QuickenMortgage, estimates that subprime loan candidates account for 15 to 20 percent of the 1 million or so mortgage-seekers who click through QuickenMortgage every month.
"We may offer subprime loans in the future, but right now our plate is pretty full," she said. "We have worked with mortgage.com in the past and this is an area they are focused on."
So, the riskier applicants who do not qualify for loans through QuickenMortgage site will be shuttled to mortgage.com.
For mortgage.com, the arrangement offers yet another source of customers for its lending services.
The Plantation firm already has agreements with the likes of Fleet Financial and First Union to provide mortgages to customers of those institutions.
Last week, Prudential Real Estate Affiliates picked mortgage.com and Chase Manhattan Mortgage Corp. to provide loans to its brokers.
In a statement, Jack Rodgers, who heads mortgage.com's consumer group, said the Intuit deal shows the company has the "technology and services that banks, lending institutions, and other organizations" need to offer Internet-based mortgage business.
Mortgage.com is a 5-year-old, privately owned firm that employs about 500 people in six offices nationally.
The firm is in the process of moving to new headquarters in Sunrise, and is also working on a $112 million initial public offering of stock.

my 48 hours; Actress Caroline Quentin, 51, tAlks gArdening in high heels, drinking rocket fuel And hAving A roAst At MArtin clunes' house.(Features)
Byline: rachel Corcoran
Do you lie-in at the weekend or make the most of the day? I'm a 6am riser and I do that at the weekend as well. I walk our five dogs and on the way back I get some eggs from the hens and make my two children pancakes for breakfast on a Saturday.
Do you ever wake up with a hangover on a Saturday? In the summer, we go to the cricket club down the road on Friday nights and all the parents meet up and drink rocket fuel, so we're definitely all feeling a bit tired on a Saturday morning!
Do you go out much? No, we're homebodies really. Occasionally I go to London to see plays and friends come to see us in Tiverton (Devon) for a weekend, which gives you the chance to catch up properly.
Beer or Bolly? Oh, I love champagne. Champagne all the way. We used to make absolutely lethal cider at our old house, it was delicious. I've planted apples here now, they're just not ready yet so I imagine we'll make it again.
Who makes your favourite roast? Sam, my husband. He's brilliant. I'm not bad at cooking a roast but Sam's is always better somehow. As long as it's really quality meat and home-grown veg then I don't mind, with a bit of homemade mint sauce or jelly.
Do you ever go to the pub for a roast? No, we're not big pub people. Because I'm away working a lot, when I'm home I really like to be at home. Or we go to Martin Clunes's house nearby and let him cook the roast. He's a really good cook.
Where is your top weekend getaway? Cornwall is great. We go to a small restaurant down there called the South Cafe, which does loads of local fish, especially from the Helford River. It's wonderful.
Who do you phone or text every weekend? My mum. She's deaf so we communicate by text most of the time. She's a better texter than any teenager, she's even doing a computer course. She's 88!
What is no weekend complete without? Tragically, it is gardening - in the greenhouse listening to Desert Island Discs. I tend to garden in whatever clothes I'm passing by in, then three hours go past and I realise I've covered high heels and a halterneck dress in mud!
Do you go for a girly shop on a Saturday? I'm a bit of an internet shopper I'd rather hang about the RHS sites or Sarah Raven's Kitchen and Garden. I really need to get over that obsession.
Best weekend of your life?Sam, Emily, Will and I went to Paris and we had the most wonderful time. We took the children to the Louvre as they're both mad about art. It was quite something to watch them in Paris for the first time -something they'd never forget.

Familiar face to lead South Seattle campus; Interim president of Seattle Central; Former Shoreline CC chief.(NWWednesday)
Byline: Nick Perry; Seattle Times higher education reporter
Gary Oertli has another chance to lead a community college -- seven years after paying a record settlement to state ethics regulators.
After a national search, Oertli on Tuesday was named the next president of South Seattle Community College. Although the details are still being finalized, he will likely start by the fall and be paid between $165,000 and $170,000 annually.
Oertli, 62, is serving as interim president at Seattle Central Community College.
"When his appointment was announced, there was a 90-second ovation from faculty and staff," said Jill Wakefield, the chancellor of Seattle Community Colleges. "I've not worked with anybody who has been so highly regarded by faculty, staff and students."
Oertli has worked for the Seattle district the past several years.
Wakefield said he has helped rebuild educational programs, launched large construction projects and forged new ties with the community.
"He's going to be an outstanding president," Wakefield said. "He's one of the best leaders I know."
Oertli's appointment marks a resurrection of sorts for the longtime community-college administrator after he got into hot water for actions he took during his five-year tenure as president of Shoreline Community College.
The state Executive Ethics Board accused Oertli of steering a state contract to a close friend, Paul Mauel, who ran the Internet startup e-Werkz. The $350,000 contract was to develop an online bookstore for the college.
In 2000, six months after the contract was signed, Oertli left Shoreline to work for e-Werkz. He was paid an $80,000 signing bonus and a salary of $184,000 a year.
In a 2003 settlement, Oertli agreed to pay the state ethics board $20,000 in fines and costs for his actions related to the contract.
On Tuesday, Oertli said his intentions at the time had been honorable and that he'd relied on the advice of legal counsel. He said his job at e-Werkz -- part of the dot-com boom and bust cycle -- lasted only about a year before the funding evaporated.
Asked if it had been difficult to make his comeback with community colleges, Oertli said he had continued to be respected after he left Shoreline and believed he had always retained his integrity.
Oertli said one of his biggest challenges at South Seattle will be to prepare for large state funding cuts, which he believes are on the horizon.
About 9,400 students attend the school, which has campuses in West Seattle and Georgetown.
Wakefield said the Shoreline incident had not figured into Oertli's latest interviews, although it had been discussed when he first started working for the district several years ago.
"He made some inadvertent actions when the intentions were positive," Wakefield said. "I guess I believe it's old news."

The toy that's back to Transform Christmas 2007.
Byline: Sean Poulter
THEY first muscled their way into the nation's toyboxes in the 1980s.
Now the Transformers are on their way back and are tipped to be one of themust-have toys for Christmas 2007.
The popularity of the first generation of the trucks and other vehicles whichcould be manipulated into heroic robots was helped by a TV cartoon seriesfeaturing their adventures.
This time round, the more sophisticated range of toys are spin-offs from afilm, called simply Transformers, which reaches cinemas this week. They includethe Transformers Movie Arm Blaster, which children can put on their arms, andOptimus Prime (pictured), which turns from a robot into a fire engine.
Woolworths - which yesterday published a list of its top ten toys for Christmas- also believes some new characters in Doctor Who will ensure the BBC show'sspin-offs are a lucrative toy franchise for a second year running.
Last Christmas, Cybermen models and helmets were among the bestsellers.
This year, a helmet which enables the wearer to talk like a
Dalek could take their place. A Doctor Who Christmas special featuring KylieMinogue will help fuel demand.
Woolworths believes that characters from In The Night Garden, another BBC show, which is produced by the makers of the Teletubbies, will also be much soughtafter.
Toys from In The Night Garden include Dancing Iggle Piggle, Makka Pakka andUpsy Daisy.
Also on the chain's list is The Fur- Real Parrot, an electronic bird thatrepeats any words spoken to it, responds to instructions and dances..
Woolworths believes Eternity II will be this year's big board game.
Invented by Christopher Monckton, a former aide to Margaret Thatcher, it is apuzzle-based game where the object is to arrange 256 pieces in a square so thecolours and patterns of every square are aligned across the whole puzzle.
The player who can arrange the pieces first will win a [pounds sterling]1million prize.
Also making a comeback is Robosapien, the must-have toy from 2004.
But this year he's turned into Homer Simpson and Spiderman - 'Homersapien' and'Spidersapien'.
Barbie makes another appearance in the top ten, this time as a talking andsinging styling head.
The UK market for toys and games is worth [pounds sterling]2.1billion a year, with half ofthose sales taking place in the last quarter.
Woolworths, Britain's biggest toy retailer, has released its top ten in Julybecause it hopes getting the top products into the minds of parents andchildren early will boost sales.
It has struggled for the past two years because of competition from thesupermarkets and the Internet.

the`SEE ME' GENERATION; Privacy is dead; guess who killed it?(Life-Today)
Byline: LINTON WEEKS Washington Post
Google Dave Feinman.
Go ahead. Really. He wants you to.
Type his name as one word and you will soon know a lot about himthrough his home page and blog on MySpace.com and the Web site that bears his name. He's 27, engaged, Jewish, a Gemini and graduate student at the University of Central Florida who likes Beavis and Butt-head. He will soon be interning in the office of Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla. Coincidentally, Wexler's office is the subject of a TV documentary series that premieres in August.
"I don't put anything on MySpace that I wouldn't say to the face of anyone I meet," says Feinman. The Internet is "a very good way to express my feelings about politics or personal things."
Feinman is a primo example of an emerging archetype: the very public citizen. A publizen.
Although publizens are all ages and both sexes, they are predominantly young members of Generation Xtrovert. The recently released Pew Internet & American Life Project survey points out that more than half of the Internet's 12 million bloggers are younger than 30.
In varying degrees, publizens grow up, fall in love, drink too much, do good deeds, experiment with drugs and sex and kinky hairstyles, sit for tattoos, enter 12-step programs, get hitched, give birth, go to work, file for divorce and do just about everything else in public. They build Web sites, produce blogs and star in reality television shows. They use new technologies to live in plain sight, and newer technologies fancier phones, Web cams, digital video programs are being created so they can do just that.
Publizens welcome the glare, the heat, the exposure. British papers reported recently that Marie Osmond's teenage daughter Jessica put up a MySpace page revealing her sexual proclivities and listing Adolf Hitler as a hero. Young people have been kicked out of college for exhibiting pictures of themselves carousing.
Bye-bye privacy
People have given up on discretion. How else can you explain the unabashed Metro rider yakking about the most intimate details of her life on her cellphone? The endless erectile dysfunction TV ads? The very personal videotapes online for all the world to see?
Tens of thousands have applied to live on camera in reality shows.
"This generation wants to be known, they want to be famous," Chris DeWolfe, a co-founder of MySpace.com recently told Vanity Fair. "This generation is self-involved, but they're also self-aware."
Don't these people understand the value of privacy?
"You are assuming," says Danah Boyd, a cultural anthropologist in the University of California at Berkeley's doctorate program, "that today's young people know privacy."
These days, Boyd points out, young people have little unstructured time where they can call the shots. When parents aren't hawk-watching their every move, school administrators, coaches, therapists, even the media are. The children of baby boomers have learned to do everything under watchful eyes.
Encouraging each other
Bob Reno, 46, is the founder of BadJocks.com, a Web site dedicated to the stupidity and outrageousness of sports figures. In May, BadJocks posted pictures of members of the Northwestern University women's soccer team in their underwear, kissing one another, performing lap dances for male students. The program was suspended, the team's hazing rituals investigated, and punishments were meted out.
Reno launched the for-profit site in early 2000. Business, he says, is booming. "Public embarrassment has been the growth industry in the United States for the last few years," he says. "You've got a generation that is growing up with digital cameras and camera phones, and they are encouraging each other and being encouraged by popular media and by the technology companies to document everything they do."
Many publizens are not that concerned about the public persona they reveal. Others use Web site features that limit access to certain information. Users often have a false sense of security. You might post a compromising photo or an away message believing that only friends will see it. But there could always be someone sitting at your friend's elbow. Or your friend could pass along the embarrassing information.
"I understand if I have a picture of me half-naked or drinking, that could ruin my prospects for the future," says Dave Feinman. Savvy publizens "participate in this public aspect of technology without compromising their future goals. I would say I am one of those people who take some care in it. And I'm probably in the minority."
Browse through MySpace, with its more than 80 million uses worldwide, or Facebook and you believe that many don't see anything strange about having their most shocking photos posted. "They just don't see that behavior as abnormal," Reno says. People are uploading pictures and videos of activities that several years ago might have only been committed clandestinely at a strip club or bachelorette party.
"People would rather be embarrassed publicly than ignored privately," Reno says.
Life in view
Living the out-in-the-open life picked up steam in the late 20th century. The 1960s were all about self-expression and sharing your inner self with the world. It was in a 1968 art catalog that Andy Warhol predicted, "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."
In the early 1970s, an everyday California family, the Louds, let TV cameras into their lives on "An American Family." The country watched in prime-time intensity as the family fell apart. In the 1970s, Tom Wolfe coined the phrase: "The Me Decade."
In the early 1980s, camcorders were introduced and folks could record their lives for all to see. The popular embracing of the Internet and the unfurling of the World Wide Web in the mid-1990s allowed publizens to show off globally. In the late 1990s, Web designer Jennifer Ringley set up a Webcam in her Washington apartment and charged people an annual fee to watch her live her everyday life.
Reality TV shows multiplied like mice. And with the advent of Web logs in the late 1990s and MySpace in 2000, the Internet became a worldwide showcase for exhibitionists and voyeurs. People watching people watching people.
You wonder why there was no marching in the streets when it was revealed that the National Security Agency has been monitoring telephone calls. People are worn down by companies tracking their every move; they are convinced that giving out privileged information might help combat terrorism and, as more and more people become publizens, they just don't care if other people eavesdrop. Fact is, they know others are listening.
Recently, Sherry Turkle of the MIT Media Lab attended the Webbys, an awards ceremony for Web sites. "I found a troubling sensibility that I see as widespread in the culture today: `Wiretap me, I don't care. Listen to me, my life is transparent, I'm not doing anything wrong.'
Public life
Perhaps letting it all hang out in public has a flip side, says Lynne Layton, professor of psychology at Harvard: "With all the running around that we all do all day and night, with the way middle class kids are scheduled, are we perhaps killing off the capacity to have an inner life?"
"We've always been very public as a species," says Kevin Kelly, a founding editor of Wired magazine. "The very notion of privacy is recent, and probably temporary. Big Brother is a type of paranoia and egoism, because in fact most lives are not worth watching. With technology we are only returning to the global village where everyone knows what everyone else is doing."
Cultural anthropologist Danah Boyd says living a public life can be healthy. In this culture of fear, "it is critical for young people to have some exposure to public life, to strangers," she says. "You need this to grow up."
Publizens like Dave Feinman thrive on the responses to their public lives. The exterior life for many is as important as, if not more important than, the interior life.
So everybody is famous, everyone is a public figure. And every life is lived out in the open. Which changes a lot of things. Libel lawyers may find it harder to determine just who is a public figure and who is not. There soon could be more people in reality TV shows than watching them. The Hollywood celebrity hierarchy could topple as the common folk become as recognizable as the stars. And there could be a general sense spreading across the land that if it doesn't happen in public, it doesn't really happen.
